Collection of Original HE-MAN: Maze of Doom Artwork by Al McWilliams - 1985

This assortment of artwork is a must have for any true Masters of the Universe fan or collector! Featuring original art by Al McWilliams, these pieces were produced for the book Masters of the Universe: Maze of Doom, published by Golden in 1985 as part of their Golden Heroic Champions series. Present is artwork for pages 4/5, 6/7, 12/13, 18/19, 20/21, 22/23 and 24/25 in seven (7) 2-page spreads on 18”x24” illustration board. What makes the art especially significant is that all of the working overlays appear to be present – pencil work and watercolor were done on the illustration board and then inked on a vellum overlay with the text then pasted on the next overlay with production notes being made on a top layer of tracing paper.

About the Artist:

Alden (“Al”) Spurr McWilliams has been in the comics business on and off since before the advent of the superhero. Although no one comic book feature stands out (newspaper work on "Twin Earths" and "Rip Kirby" are perhaps his apogee), his impeccable drawing and gleaming, burnished inks stand him in good stead when compared to the other illustrative stars of the era. McWilliams started working in comics in 1938 at Dell, where he continued until the 1970s. He was known as one of the best artists for aviation artwork and frequently worked on westerns, war comics and science fiction (including the original 1960’s Star Trek comic book series).
